Welcome to the Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry is led by a dedicated group of professors who are engaged in a broad range of high impact research areas, delivering a valuable education to both undergraduate and graduate students. The department specializes in the practice of Green Chemistry, defined as chemistry conducted with sustainability in mind. Our faculty prioritizes society-focused research aimed at addressing global challenges through the lens of Green Chemistry. Our diverse course offerings, such as Green Chemistry, Chemical Toxicology, and Medicinal Chemistry, equip students with the knowledge and skills to lead the next wave of sustainable innovation. Our undergraduate students are actively encouraged to engage in research early on, gaining valuable experience while working closely with faculty mentors and PhD students in our labs.
Our undergraduate programs give students the flexibility to tailor their coursework for potential careers in forensics, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and environmental chemistry. Graduates will also be prepared to pursue advanced degrees in medicine, dentistry, or other fields.
Our Research: Chemistry for a Sustainable Future
The scholarship of the chemistry faculty extends across all major areas of chemistry and biochemistry. Our research projects align with the core principles of green chemistry, ensuring our work contributes to a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable world. Current research areas include:
- Renewable Energy: Developing sustainable energy sources through solar energy conversion.
- Climate Impacts: Investigating methods for the capture and conversion of CO2
- Eco-Friendly Synthesis: Innovating chemical processes to minimize waste, reduce toxicity, and conserve resources.
- Environmental Remediation: Designing methods to remove pollutants and restore ecosystems.
