We bilingually applaud Singho Chan (陳陞豪) as our 24th student to successfully propose and execute a 10-course individual major in Asian American Studies at UMB. In addition, seven students from 2023-2024 have completed at least six courses and all AsAmSt program-of-study requirements: Louis Miguel Arriaza Erazo, Thi Hoàng (Thi Minh Thi Hoang), Annie Huynh, Thi Huynh, Christine Le, Supriya Rai (सĤया राई), and Nhi Vo. They are among 162 students who have graduated with AsAmSt concentrations since 2000. Additionally, we congratulate Cindy Bui in Gerontology and Mai Hu Vang in Higher Education for completing their doctoral degrees. Mai is the second student from a Hmoob (Hmong) refugee family— following Mai See Yang in Gerontology (2017)—to earn a UMass Boston PhD.

After three pandemic semesters of remote instruction, a much-needed return to in-person learning defined the final year for eight undergraduates—Nathan Chul Chun (전철), Dung Do, Juan Carlo Gaspar, Nina Nguyen, Tan Nguyen, Layanie Oscar, Kirsteen Marie Raboy and Yewen Huang (黄晔⽂)— each of whom has successfully completed six or more AsAmSt courses and all program-of-study requirements in Asian American Studies. A total of 140 students have graduated with AsAmSt concentrations since 2000. Additionally, with great intention, Jessica B. Wong (⿈慧美), added four AsAmSt program-of-study courses to complement her master’s degree while longtime director/staff of the Asian American Student Success Program (AASSP), Sara Boxell Hoang, finished her PhD in Higher Education with a dissertation on AANAPISI staff identity development.

With pandemic persistence, seven resilient undergraduates—Kira I. Relia Arzadon, Yayin He (何雅茵), Cara Gee Lew, Danny Thien Mai, Jaely Cailin Pereira, Zhihang Wen (⽂志航), and Jin Weng (翁锦润)— remained remotely connected to finish six or more AsAmSt courses and all program-of-study requirements in Asian American Studies. A total of 132 students have now completed AsAmSt concentrations since 2000. We additionally recognize four dedicated graduate students, including three UMB undergraduate AsAmSt alumni, who completed their master’s degrees while contributing to various AsAmSt curriculum, teaching, and research projects: Parmita Gurung (पारमीता गङ), Nao HangRobertson, Pratna Kem, and Alyssa Jasmine Moir. We offer much overdue optimism and continuing care to these ten featured students and to all 2020-2021 graduating students who have experienced Asian American Studies at UMB.
